Orthopedic surgery focuses on correcting problems that occur in the skeletal system and its attachments as well as nervous system problems which occur in the spine. Orthopedic surgeons may focus on specific areas such as knees or joint replacement or may focus on spinal problems and the correction of the problems within one or more areas. Orthopedic surgeons may focus on chronic or acute issues that may occur at birth, or due to an injury, or due to aging related problems, correcting problems that arise in the skeleton and its attachments, the ligaments and tendons. It may also deal with some problems of the nervous system, such as those that arise from injury of the spine. These problems can occur at birth, through injury, or as the result of aging. They may be acute, as in injury, or chronic, as in many aging-related problems.
Pain Management is an area of treatment that offers patients the care needed in order to eliminate or decrease pain. Types of pain may vary and areas of treatment vary as well depending on the type and cause of pain. The areas of treatment include the major parts and organs of the body,central nervous system, and peripheral nervous system. A pain management doctor focuses on treating injuries with exercise, medicine, and/or pain injections. Treatment with physical medicine and rehabilitation may be used, TENS, acupuncture, light therapy, or other types of cognitive therapy. Types of pain may be mild, mild to moderate, or moderate to severe pain or chronic pain. Medicine including non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or injections may also be used. The various injections that are used epidural steroid injections and facet joint injections for the neck and back areas. Epidural steroid injections are used for the treatment of reducing pain and inflammation and may be used in repeat blocks if pain is reduced up to 50% with pain relief lasting for 6 to 8 weeks. Facet Joint injections are used for pain that is more localized and associated with neck extension or lower back extension and if successful initial pain relief of 70% plus at least 50% for a duration of at least 6 weeks.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) is a branch of medicine that focuses on the enhancement and restoration of functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. A physician specializing in PM&R focuses on restoring optimal function to people with injuries to the muscles, bones, tissues, and nervous system. Rehabilitation is quite broad and patients that are assisted may include amputated limbs, spinal cord injury, sports injury, heart problems causing stroke, low back pain, traumatic brain injury, fibromyalgia, and musculoskeletal pain syndromes. Electrodiagnostic medicine Or EDX may be used which includes EMG testing which use electrodes to evaluate the activity in the skeletal muscles.
Acupuncture is a type of Chinese medicine which is an alternative approach to traditional medicine. Originally came about over 2000 years ago using a Yin and Yang approach has now grown to being favored around the world. Although the Yin and Yang approach and use of the life force energy view has decreased and now has changed by use of herbs and needles to focus on trigger points. Acupuncture varies by country and here in the states we have the traditional as well as the focus on acupuncture points to heal ailments within the body. A common type of treatment uses needles anywhere from 5 to 20 inserted with a plastic guide. This type of treatment decreases pain in the interem but must be ongoing to see a vast improvement of results. It’s holistic approach has increased its popularity in recent years. Thus many chiropractors use this approach within our offices.
Chiropractic is a discipline that focuses on healing the body with a preventative approach as well as a rehabilitative approach. Doctors of chiropractic value working with other health practitioners as well to ensure the best outcomes for their patients. This type of medicine allows a healthcare approach with the focus of diagnosing and use of manipulation of the joints int the spine which cause problems relating to the nervous system, muscles, and organ tissue. Chiropractic offers patients treatment without having to use other more invasive types of treatment if they are not necessary.
Sports medicine is the treatment of injuries due to sports related injuries including running, biking soccer, football, weight lifting, golf, basketball, and all other types of sports as well. Treatment may be preventative or used to rehabilitate the injured area. This may include prescribing exercises, osteopathic manipulation, and or injections.
